Sailing/Kayaking

About Adaptive Sailing:

Through the generous contribution of donors, ASPO is proud to offer adaptive sailing as one of its sports.  Adaptive sailing takes place at Portage Lakes in Summit County on dates listed below.

ASPO provides on and off water instruction for the individuals with physical disabilities in 1 hour sessions.

ASPO’s fleet consists of two 2.3 access dinghy’s and one 303 dinghy. (Advanced sailors competing at the Paralympics use Sonar and 2.4 meter boats.) All boats are very stable and will not capsize.  Individuals with a physical disability 13 years and older are invited to participate.  Dates and registration information are provided below.

About Adaptive Kayaking:

Through a generous grant from ODNR, ASPO is pleased to offer kayaking to individiuals with disabilties.  ASPO has tandem and single kayaks with adaptive seatbacks, outriggers and adaptive paddles.

2016 Sessions:

Sessions are for 1.25 hours which includes loading and unloading, 20 minutes of instruction and 45 minutes on the water. Repeat attendees who have previously had instruction will have more time on the water. Each day there will be 8 slots for kayaking (4 – single kayak, 4 – tandem) and except when dates indicate kayaking only, there will be 4 slots available for sailing. If slots are available, family and friends of participants with disabilities may sign up to kayak/sail. If no one has signed up for the second session, you can remain on the water for an additional hour.
