Adaptive Sports Ohio Announces 2026 OIAS Award Winners

Adaptive Sports Ohio is proud to announce the Ohio Interscholastic Adaptive Sports (OIAS) award winners for the 2026 wheelchair basketball season who were recognized on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at the OIAS Wheelchair Basketball State Championship at Cleveland Public Auditorium.

Ten players from the 13 participating league teams earned All-Ohio honors, which recognize players with athletic excellence and sportsmanship. The team includes Green sophomore Zayne Hammoudeh, Wooster freshman Ella Wirth, Tallmadge junior TaShaun Myers, Green senior Jack Pickett, Centerville senior Kai Smith, Jackson senior Abby LaPole, and Tallmadge senior Michael Mami. This is Myers and Hammoudeh third time each being named All-Ohio. Wirth and Smith each earn the honor for a second time, while Pickett and Mami are each on the team for the first time. LaPole is All-Ohio for the fourth consecutive season, something achieved by only one prior athlete. Included in the All-Ohio honors are three players without a disability, Wooster junior Tony Rammel, Tallmadge senior Holden Ristau, and Wadsworth junior KJ Mack.

In addition to the All-Ohio announcement, two players, a coach and a district earned special recognition. The honorees include TaShaun Myers from Tallmadge, Tony Rammel of Wooster, Greg Michalec from Tallmadge, and Cloverleaf Local Schools.

TaShaun Myers, a junior for the Tallmadge Blue Devils, is the 2026 Athlete of the Year for athletic excellence, sportsmanship, leadership, and exemplary character. Myers led his team to its third consecutive OIAS State Championship and undefeated season, averaging 21.6 points per game, the highest season average in league history. Myers also exhibits high levels of leadership and sportsmanship on and off the court.

The 2026 Athlete of the Year Without a Disability is Tony Rammel, a junior for the Wooster Generals for athletic excellence, sportsmanship, leadership, and exemplary character. Rammel broke the record for six-point games in a season, which is the maximum number of points per game allowed by non-disabled players per league rules. Rammel also demonstrates a love for the game and respect for his teammates and opponents.

Greg Michalec from Tallmadge is the 2026 Coach of the Year for elevating ability and empowering the future of athletes. Michalec is the owner of a perfect 35-0 record over his two seasons as Head Coach of the Blue Devils including two of the team’s three league championships. Michalec is a strong developer of players from all levels with an ability to tap into his players’ strengths.

The 2026 District of the Year went to Cloverleaf Local Schools for their commitment to inclusion, passionate leadership, and superior community engagement. The district is extremely supportive of their program and the league, even as their own program has dealt with multiple recent challenges this year. They supported one team member through a serious illness and another through a season-ending injury, while never missing a game. The leaders of Cloverleaf have embraced OIAS and wheelchair basketball and routinely host neutral site games.

OIAS, operating under Adaptive Sports Ohio, provides students with physical disabilities from grades 1-12 the opportunity to represent and compete for their school. This initiative ensures students with physical disabilities are no longer sidelined, defined by their disabilities, or left out. Instead, students with physical disabilities experience all the benefits that interscholastic sports provide and, most of all – life change. The organization has 15 member school districts, including new additions of Norwayne and Miamisburg.

Adaptive Sports Ohio was founded in 2009 by Chief Executive Officer, Lisa Followay. In the years since the organization’s inception, it has grown to serve hundreds of physically impaired youth and adults across the state through an abundance of competitive and recreational sports. Its mission is to remove barriers to ensure that individuals with physical disabilities have a chance to play, and utilize sport to elevate ability and empower futures.
